What is the purpose of the upload feature?

I think, I don't yet understand the context in which the `--upload` feature is supposed to be used. Is this when you have previously downloaded an IMAP folder and deleted all mail there and than you re-upload it without the attachments?
Is that the envisioned strategy to save the original emails?
