Inquiry: Are XForms a non-goal

XForms are an existing and mature open standard for representing Forms similar to your custom JSON model.

Is interop with this standard a possible project goal?

If so, it opens the door to interop with tools like ODK, KoboCollect, LibreOffice, and even GIS software like QField and QGIS.

Hi, thanks for raising this. I wasn’t aware of the XForms standard before this, but it does look quite fascinating.

I wouldn’t classify XForms interoperability as a non-goal, but it’s also not an immediate goal. At this stage, it’s best seen as a nice-to-have, long-term enhancement, and if supported, it would likely be partial and secondary due to the extensiveness of it.

The idea behind the project is to keep it as simple and easy to configure as possible hence the need for UI based config in absence of which JSON is used. That said, in the future it’s certainly worth exploring whether XForms could be supported to open up interoperability.

I’ll keep this issue open as a long-term enhancement / discussion, and contributions or proposals in this area would definitely be welcome.

The ODK XForms implementation is a subset of the W3C one, so perhaps that is a better one to look at?
