Autoformatting long lines

Hi,

Not sure if this is a 2025.3 issue, or Bash Support Pro, or a new config setting somewhere, but I've noticed that long lines are now autoformatted to have \.

Example:

#!/usr/bin/env bash

foo bar baz aaaa | bbb ccc aaaaa

Add more aaaa's...

#!/usr/bin/env bash

foo bar baz aaaa | bbb ccc aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

It then autoformats to:

#!/usr/bin/env bash

foo bar baz aaaa \
  | bbb ccc aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Is it possible that you were not on 5.x before upgrading your IDE?
The wrapping happens because 5.0 added new formatting features. This was changed in 5.x, the most recent minor updates did not change the formatting.

You enabled the Google Shell style guide rules. The guide says:

Maximum line length is 80 characters.
If you have to write literal strings that are longer than 80 characters, this should be done with a here document or an embedded newline if possible.
Words that are longer than 80 chars and can’t sensibly be split are ok, but where possible these items should be on a line of their own, or factored into a variable. Examples include file paths and URLs, particularly where string-matching them (such as grep) is valuable for maintenance.

BashSupport Pro enables "wrap on typing" at the configured "hard wrap" margin (120 in the IDEs iirc) if the Google style guide rules are enabled. It's currently not possible to turn off the enforced "wrap on typing" rule.

I agree that this may be a bit too much. I need to think a bit about this how to make this more useful. Thoughts? 😄

Ah, maybe I wasn't, not completely sure. (Bash Support Pro is one of those plugins that is rock solid and dependable, so I never actually know what version I'm on as I never have to report issues :P).

Also could be the Google style guide -- I know it's on by default (?), so could just be this new project where I disable it for everything else.

Also, as an idea -- I know that JetBrains has similar opinions about Markdown wrapping, but they allow you to disable wrapping (previously I set this to an absurdly high value, not that I disagree, it's just annoying when it happens).

You had me spooked for a bit 😉 The Google Shell style is turned off by default. It's quite strict and it would make things worse or more complex for most users who don't expect it. If you think that the style is somehow on by default, please let me know!

If you did not intentionally enable the style, turn it off.

Regarding the "hard wrap on typing". BashSupport Pro's default is to follow the generic "Code Style" setting of this option, as highlighted in the first screenshot.
Unfortunately, with shfmt you can't override this in BashSupport Pro's code style. That's a bug and I'll make a fix to allow overriding this even if shfmt is used as formatter.

My recommendations:

• Turn off the Google Shell style, unless you really want it
• Make sure to turn off "hard wrap on typing in the generic code style settings"
• If you only want this for shell scripts, then:
  • switch to the new, native formatter (Tab "Engine and Style")
  • configure the setting shown in the tab shown in the 2nd screenshot

Ohh! Sorry, completely misunderstood what you meant, apologies.

No idea how I enabled that, 🤦.

So what I find weird about Follow Google Shell Style Guide is (in PyCharm 2025.3 atleast), it seems global - it applies to all projects as a setting, disabling it in project-a then opening project-b it's disabled, re-enabling it then re-enables it everywhere?

It's also in New Project Settings, does that apply to just that project, or is it a mistake as it's global?

Uhm, yes, that‘s a bug. It makes much more sense to keep this setting per-project. I‘ll see if there‘s a good, backwards-compatible fix for 5.x.

Should note - I have the Follow Google Shell Style Guide disabled now, and the previous behaviour is now appearing again for those extra long lines. Cheers.
