Add Wx Config File to the AvyWeb Server

The Sierra Avalanche Center uses custom weather tables in our forecasts. The AFP has a setting that allows us to host the config file, and then the AFP uses that config file to pull the weather data and build the weather forecast tables:

The config file for these tables lives at: https://archive.sierraavalanchecenter.org/sites/all/libraries/avalanche.org-API-Client/SAC_WxConfigJSON.php

Can we add that PHP file to the AvyWeb servers so that the AFP can pull from something like https://www.sierraavalanchecenter.org/avalanche.org-API-Client/SAC_WxConfigJSON.php?

Hey Andy, what does this allow you to do differently than what is happening now? Just trying to get the full picture

It allows us to host the config file on the Avy-Web server rather than having to maintain our old server to host the config file on. We have another config file for the weather station grouping @ https://archive.sierraavalanchecenter.org/sites/all/libraries/avalanche.org-API-Client/SAC-Weather-Station-Zones.kml that I would also like to move to the Avy-Web server.

Was there a specific reason that the AFP couldn't just have you upload these there and manage them through the AFP dasboard? Hosting a file won't be technically difficult, but this doesn't immediately strike me as an obviously correct separation of concerns.

@stevekuznetsov, I am not sure what the reasoning is behind not keeping those config files on the AFP server. I know some of the config files (like the map kml files) are on the AFP servers. We could loop Snowbound into the conversation?

I would like to use these config files relatively quickly, though. I also asked Snowbound to whitelist our archive domain as a temporary solution.

We should also make the change to serve from from your avy-fx.org site in the interim to get you working this season while we figure out the long-term plan here.

@rustynwac and @stevekuznetsov, any chance we can get the files on the Avy-Web server quickly so we can use them now? Our archive site is currently down, so I cannot utilize the config files at all right now. The wx forecast table was working up until this morning. Thanks!

@stevekuznetsov @rustynwac @busbyk @rchlfryn - I have a temporary fix. I put the wx config file on a server I manage. It is working for now (https://www.tahoewildernessmedicine.com/sites/all/libraries/avalanche.org-API-Client/SAC_WxConfigJSON1.php)

We'll plan for a season fix for this year on AvyWeb and push for them to prioritize moving this into the AFP in the spring

@andyanderso you should now be able to upload .kml and .php files to the Documents collection now.

You can then copy the url for the file after uploading by clicking the copy icon (this is an example I tested on the template tenant):

If you embed these non-PDF documents using the Document Block you will get some less than ideal results (technically they will be embedded in an iframe) but I don't expect that you'll do that. A longer term solution would be to restrict how non-PDF files are displayed for that block but wanted to get this out.
