Notification System Implementation (Blocked)

Design choices must be finalized before we build the notification system.

Decisions Needed

• Lab-level or course-level notifications?
• Notify for all courses or only submitted courses?
• Follow/unfollow options?
• How can users disable or limit notifications?
• In-app only or also email (and what frequency)?

Note:
The first person to provide a complete, well-reasoned answer in the discussion will have their reply marked as the Correct Answer in the GitHub discussion, which helps them get the badge.

The user should receive notification in the following cases:
1- A new course is now available on the website
2- New comment or reaction on her submission lab.
3- The people he follows.

He receives notifications in her email case 1.
The notification settings have two options: disable(default) or unable defualt .

Types of Notifications

A. System-wide / Platform Notifications
New course available → User receives Email + In-App Notification

B. User Activity Notifications
New comment or reaction on user’s submitted lab → In-App Only

C. Social Notifications
Updates from people the user follows → In-App Only

Thanks Omar for the breakdown!

A few quick notes:

• New course notifications aren’t feasible now — all courses are pre-added directly in the DB, and we don’t have an admin panel to trigger a “new course” event.
• Follow-based notifications don’t apply since we currently have no follow system.
• User activity notifications are the realistic ones we can support:
  • When a user submits a lab.
  • When someone comments on their submission.
  • When someone upvote (anonymous → “Someone upvoted to your submission”).

So for now, notifications should focus on:
lab submission → comment → submission upvote.
