Description
This was decided in a Core Group conversation about partitives ("many/ADJ of the books": nmod(many, books)). We want to make the rule as general as possible, so we think it should apply across the board to adjectives with nominal-like deprels (typically excluding predicative positions and amod).
English-EWT already uses nmod for most partitives. To review ones that are currently obl:
- with
obls maked by "of": https://universal.grew.fr/?custom=691a7e4b05f69- "Tired of spam?" This is clearly a predicate (short for "Are you tired of spam?"), so leave as
obl. - "Real Christian of you": What Adele Goldberg calls the Gossip Construction. Also implicitly predicative.
- "Best of luck": An idiom which I can't really explain but perhaps it derives from the partitive?
- "the most unlikely of locations": Shows a construction where a comparative/superlative coerces an adjective into heading a partitive.
- "I can't give that good of a review": This is a degree construction where "that" marks degree and the of-PP is licensed by the construction. Not obvious to me what the right analysis is.
- Other examples include "several of X", "the least of us", "the rest of X", "enough of a global message".
nmodseems right for these. - TL;DR I think
nmodis justifiable for all except "Tired of spam?" and "Real Christian of you" which are implicitly predicates. (root/parataxis ADJs should be checked manually)
- "Tired of spam?" This is clearly a predicate (short for "Are you tired of spam?"), so leave as
- the above heuristic exclude predicates, most of which are
obl-licensors. But there are cases that would fitnmodlike "she is the best of the best". https://universal.grew.fr/?custom=691a8171a787b - with
obl+caseother than "of", ADJ not root or parataxis: https://universal.grew.fr/?custom=691a824dcbd94- most of these should be
nmod. A few of them are actually predicative, e.g. coordinated with root word or in parentheses.
- most of these should be
- with
obl+caseother than "of", root or parataxis ADJ: https://universal.grew.fr/?custom=691a7fcda0290- most of these do not qualify ("Sorry about that") but a few of them do ("Best in Memphis")
