This is a great looking project, just stumbled onto it. This runs on original boards rather than PC /PROC?

How close are the games to the originals?

Yes this runs on the original boards. Gameplay is totally different as everything has to rewritten completely (rules and dmd graphics). Only the existing sounds can be reused.

hey @aeneas-flippers-be @bcd what happened with this project? no updates in many years. everyone moved to proc because it's easier to develop on a PC with Python?

TBH it was more or less feature complete, then Brian went to go to work for Heighway and we all kinda went out separate ways. I've been meaning to redownload it and make sure it still compiles/runs with modern software, I should get round to it at some point. It's not really fair to compare it to PROC/MPF as they have two different aims. FreeWPC was always about minimum barrier to entry, reusing the same hardware and developing in a similar way to how they did back then.

Hi, I've been playing around with freewpc over the years but usually got stuck somewhere and couldn't solve it on my own. When I get a wpc machine I try to make a freewpc setup for it. But I'm not a C programmer so often get stuck.. About 12 years ago I made whitewater rules, but it often crashes and I don't know enough to debug it.. Also made a lot of rules for cactus canyon, before discovering a freewpc rom doesn't work on wpc95 hardware, even though it'll work in pinmame. Once made a machine file for Bram Stokers Dracula. Didn't work on rules as the left gate for mist didn't work correctly. It's driven from the fliptronics board and in freewpc it was not powerful enough, it didn't raise enough to allow the ball to pass under it. Made a popeye machine file, there every coil and flasher works, but I never implemented any rules. Sold that machine as I dislike the layout and didn't think any new rules could make it better. Started on DrWho. There my problem is that the mini playfield is complex, there is only one opto but you need to be able to detect 3 positions, clockwise and ccw. Never started on making a custom driver for the mpf. Don't know enough of C and those rtt driver things.. All the rest of coils do work. I have ideas for new rules so hope one day to get that working. And lastly, in november I started again, now on Cftbl. Already have some rules (I posted on tiltforums.com about it). But half of the flashers and the lamp for the hologram just don't work, even though I think they're correctly defined. I'd love to get some community back around freewpc so that the code can get updated or people can help each other. Bye, Aeneas.

Why doesn't it run on a real WPC95 machine?

I have no idea why not. I know James Cardona investigated it a bit as he wanted to make NGG2.0 with freewpc initially. I think he thought it had to do with some timings. In pinmame a compiled wpc95 rom starts, installed in the game the cpu doesn't boot correctly. No one else with enough knowledge of the wpc hardware and C / assembly has investigated. It would be great if someone would get it working.

I likely could. But I'm finding the build system overly complex and stale. I can't even get the basics built. There are a lot of native tool build issues, including imgld and imgbld. Besides, folks are just having so much fun nowadays with PC Class tools like RaspberryPi and graphical programing languages.
