AI Chat Files / Vector Stores

I'm not sure if this is mostly a docs issue, or perhaps just a hole in the SDK. But is there currently a way (or is there a plan) to support:

1. Uploading Files
2. Create Vector Stores that we can attach files to
3. Reference these from a Chat Message?

You can do (3), via HostedFileContent and HostedVectorStoreContent.

There's currently no abstraction for (1) and (2)... you'd use the target SDK for the particular service you care about to interact with their file / vector stores.

Thanks the HostedVectorStoreContent was exactly what I was missing. Any plans on expanding so there is a more unified approach to file/vector management?

It's on the backlog to create an abstraction for server-side vector stores, but it's not currently a high priority.

@stephentoub you had mentioned that the support for OpenAI would be going away and it's just temporary... I know the package is still in "preview" but I'm a bit curious have there been any discussions with the OpenAI team to actually add support directly as part of their SDK for .NET? Just a little curious since we're ~10 months down the road and they still don't seem to have adopted it directly. #5921 (comment)

Most providers have adopted it directly into the SDK, e.g. AWS, Anthropic, Google Cloud, etc. OpenAI hasn't yet. I think it's likely we'll just end up with M.E.AI.OpenAI as a stable package.
