how to run in dev mode

when I run it in dev mode (npm run dev), it just comes up with a blank screen for interview coder plus the console is open in the browser.  Would I still have to subscribe to get it to work in dev mode?  Or is there a way to run it for free?  Also, , I get electron errors the 2nd time I run it.
