in the current implementation scheme, images of the sample would be linked as related resources:

Do we need a more explicit way to link to images? e.g. an 'images' property?

I don't think so with the following additions:
Media Type or Resource Type with an enumeration analogous to DataCite would be worthwhile. As would the MIME type or format of the resource. To use the resource programmatically, you need some idea of what the type of digital resource being related to facilitate proper handling. Ben-- good points... might need to recommend including that information. We've been trying to keep it simple, but as people use things, they tend to want new features....
