Cannot contact Plex Media Server

I am not sure why I might be the only one with the issue but when I install and run, the web interface comes up and shows my media server, but cannot pull the content from the server. It eventually times out saying Could not contact Plex Media Server (my server name here) (my external ip address:my ip port).

I believe that the issue is related to the fact that I cannot access internal network devices using the external ip address, and this appears to be that my media server is also my web server, so it is trying to use the external ip address to query the media server content and cannot reach it because the external ip address will not return from an internal source.
