If the app simply quits after being run, does that mean Flashback wasn't found or that the app crashed?

I'm not clear if it only says if you do have it, or if it is supposed to say either way.

When I launch the app, it immediately closes with no feedback at all.

(10.7.3 on a MacBook Air)

What should happen is you run the application, click on a button that says "Check for Flashback Infection" and the application should tell you what it is checking and whether or not it has found the infection.

It shouldn't immediately close after you launch it.

I had to run

xattr -d com.apple.quarantine /Applications/FlashbackChecker.app/Contents/MacOS/FlashbackChecker

to get it to launch.

Weird. All the quarantine attribute should do is tell the OS to display the "FlashbackChecker.app is an application downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it? [Cancel] [Open] " dialog. Was that dialog not appearing?

Same here, I had to move it to the Applications folder (was running it from Desktop)

Strange... might have something to do with the fact that I signed it with my Developer ID.
You sure you aren't running a DP of 10.7.4 ?

Maybe it had something to do with the fact that it wasn't
in/applications but on an external drive at/volumes/data/applications?
