ECv22 not detected after firmware upgrade to latest git, ECv34 does work

I upgraded my Gen3 mobo to latest git (v3.1) and my EC as well. After resetting the machine I get:

[13:30:41] Motherboard firmware v3.1 ()
[13:30:42] Toolhead 0: Not found.

Unplugging the EC and attaching a ECv34 board:

[13:34:25] Motherboard firmware v3.1 ()
[13:34:25] Toolhead 0: Extruder controller firmware v2.81 (Extruder)

Unplugging the ECv34 and attaching a different ECv22 board:

[13:35:28] Motherboard firmware v3.1 ()
[13:35:29] Toolhead 0: Not found.

ok. I'll add this to our bug system, and see what it would take to fix. Is this preventing you from printing, or just an annoyance?

I'm using the extstepper mode (while waiting for Robs 5D shield to arrive) which only works on ECv22, so it is indeed preventing me from printing :(

So I flashed the ECv34 with 3.1 as well and:

[12:14:32] Motherboard firmware v3.1 ()
[12:14:33] Toolhead 0: Not found.

So something in the v3.1 EC firmware kills communication with the MB

I tried some more versions:

MB 3.0 + ECv34 2.81 -> works
MB 3.0 + ECv34 3.0 -> does not work
MB 3.0 + ECv34 3.1 -> does not work

It looks like something in the EC code changed between 2.81 and 3.0 that break communication with a Gen3 MB
