Concept of 'local/directories'?

Would someone be so kind to explain the concept of the above named config setting?
I don't get what this setting does, why it is needed and how it is used...

It's an optional config, it's not needed.

It allows you to customise the virtual directories that are shown when you use the extension's browse feature. How you access the browse content very much depends on your client.

You can see the default settings at https://github.com/mopidy/mopidy-local/blob/master/mopidy_local/ext.conf#L23

You would probably need to read the source to fully understand the uri format and available options here. But, for example, if you just wanted to hide some of the directories then you would delete the specific item(s) from this config.

Actually, it would be better to write some documentation about those URIs.
I wanted to define a custom virtual directory called "Recently added tracks" that would display the latest 200 added tracks sorted by newest. I cannot do it because I don't know how to use URIs and the source is not clear enough for users (it isn't even commented for us to understand something).

I tried to do the "last month's tracks" virtual directory by adding together "type=track" and "max-age=max-age=2592000" but Iris won't show any tracks in it, while MPD clients such as Cantata would do it. I really cannot understand why though

I created a new virtual directory going of the definition of the existing ones:

Last year's updates local:directory?type=album&max-age=31536000

It works fine in different MPD clients like Cantata and MAFA (on Android). If it doesn't work in Iris than I guess it's an issue with this web extension.

I am looking for a way to view albums by date added. I presume that mopidy holds some sort of folder date data because when I rescan the folders, the last month's tracks" virtual directory does not change. What I am very interested is in being able to order content by the date that the file / folder was created / modified, not the "year" mp3 data. From what I can see, mp3 metadata does not hold a "file created / modified" timestamp.
I am looking for this function, as I find it is a great way to remember what I was listening to in the past ... a personal trail of discovery if you wish.

All metadata is held per track, nothing is per directory.

The fields we currently support are at https://docs.mopidy.com/stable/api/models/#mopidy.models.Track and you'll see we have last_modified (mtime) already. Mopidy-local supports that and populates it, that's exactly how the virtual directory works, as you mentioned. I don't think we are missing anything.

This seems to refer to playlists and not files themselves. Does mopidy consider itself to be a "master" playlist or is this for playlists that I create?

Integer representing when the track was last modified. Exact meaning depends on source of track. For local files this is the modification time in milliseconds since Unix epoch. For other backends it could be an equivalent timestamp or simply a version counter.`

I am only consulting local files therefore if want to order by last modified from 01/01/2000 in milliseconds,

tells me that 946684800000 is the Unix Epoch equivalence, so this sort of config command should work.

Default config values are not required in your config, you'll need to add it. They are documented in the Mopidy-Local readme or use mopidy config to see your current values, add the current directories setting plus your new "21 century Album updates" item. When you read the readme, you'll see the values you can use, last_modified isn't supported.

And you saw the comment in the /usr/share/mopidy/conf.d/:

To turn off internetarchive extension, edit /etc/mopidy/mopidy.conf and add:
