It would be nice, to give the synapse-operator an address and an secret (with username and password). to access an postgresql (with watching the secret for changes - e.g. for PostgreSQL-Operator: https://postgres-operator.readthedocs.io/en/latest/administrator/#password-rotation-in-k8s-secrets).

FYI, it's possible to have Synapse connecting to an existing PostgreSQL cluster by:

1. Creating your custom homeserver.yaml
2. Setting the correct database: section in your homeserver.yaml: https://matrix-org.github.io/synapse/develop/usage/configuration/config_documentation.html#database
3. Creating a ConfigMap containing your homeserver.yaml
4. Creating the Synapse resource, using the ConfigMap as input for the homeserver configuration.

For password rotation, you would need to update the ConfigMap, so it's not as straightforward as the solution you suggest.
