Any luck with Home Assistant?

I just got my ERV and I'm looking into doing exactly what you are describing here. I might need to bite the bullet like you did and get an official controller, but what I really want is an esp32 with esphome to control it.

Unfortunately, I sold the house it was in and don't have one at the new house, so the project is dead. I only got the point where I knew I could measure the modbus signals with a logic analyzer between the ERV and the controller. I never got around to testing commands and working back out what did what.
