Is it possible to use devices' MAC Addresses instead of their IPs?

I don't have a lot of experience programming so I don't know if this is even possible. Is there any way to modify the code so that dynamic IP addresses wouldn't be a problem?

I was wondering about that as well and thinking of looking into how complex it would be. My thought would be to store the MAC of the device on the initial network scan along with the initial IP when added.

Once you have the MAC stored, you can do a periodic ARP lookup to check for a new IP and cache that. Caching the IP would reduce load on the hub and keep operations speedy. To catch where the IP might have changed between the periodic checks, you could run an ARP lookup if you fail to get a response from an API call. In my experience, most DHCP servers, at least those on home routers, will continue to assign the same DHCP address on renewals so the IP should only change if you have a power loss at the bulb and the network is restarted.
