file conflict

There is a file conflict when trying to install the latest marctools when libmarc-record-perl is alread installed:

dpkg: Fehler beim Bearbeiten des Archivs /home/ck/Downloads/marctools_1.6.4_amd64.deb (--install):
 Versuch, »/usr/bin/marcdump« zu überschreiben, welches auch in Paket libmarc-record-perl 2.0.7-1 ist

Any idea how to fix this?

I'm sorry to hear that, we were a bit careless with naming with this package.

There is dpkg-divert, which would allow to rename files with conflicting paths. It's not that usual, but happens (e.g. I have a diversion for "parallel" which is in both moreutils and in the parallel package).

This approach keeps the original libmarc-record-perl files intact while installing marctools executables with a different suffix.

Step 1: Check what executables marctools provides

dpkg -c /home/ck/Downloads/marctools_1.6.4_amd64.deb | grep bin/

Step 2: Divert the conflicting executables before installing marctools

sudo dpkg-divert --add --rename --divert /usr/bin/marcdump.marctools /usr/bin/marcdump

If there are other conflicting executables, divert them too:

# Example for other potential conflicts
sudo dpkg-divert --add --rename --divert /usr/bin/marcvalidate.marctools /usr/bin/marcvalidate

Step 3: Install marctools

sudo dpkg -i /home/ck/Downloads/marctools_1.6.4_amd64.deb

Step 4: Create convenience symlinks (optional)

sudo ln -s /usr/bin/marcdump.marctools /usr/local/bin/marcdump-mt

To reverse the diversion later:

sudo dpkg-divert --remove /usr/bin/marcdump
