Whoops, this slipped through the review cracks until now. Tested compile; didn't test the features as I don't have a MWE set up for this. But if it works for you, let's merge!

This PR is mostly sanity checking for options and one minor fix for the VTK file writing (col-major). I'll merge it. |

This minor change checks that the user has specified a background potential if
M0_BACKis selected. Otherwise,expwill seg fault by trying to call a null function. That is not pretty. It's really a user error but no one wants to see a seg fault.
