It is possible that the user has specified a git tag, or commit in their application manifest.
Ideally we'd detect this, and prevent the source from being updated (as we cannot push back to a commit or tag).
This change introduces new git reference types to handle detecting these different types - and also throws an exception if we're unable to handle a particular source.
This does not require a change to server.
