Our parse tests include building a migraphx program from scratch and then loading in the onnx file to verify they are the same. You can generate that code pretty easily if you do ./driver read einsum_permute_sd3_test.onnx --cpp. But usually we write by hand since we expect the program to look a certain way before trying to go through the parser.
This operator is quite complicated, so the actual design/instructions will probably change in the future. The test would fail in the future if that's the case, but then it can also be rewritten accordingly.

Writing tests that compare against some intermediate representation, e.g. with some nop operator(s) is not going to add any value here, hence this simple approach - all we want to know that we can read a model like SD3.
Please note, there already are 50+ such test cases reading such intermediate results -- and this one is just an overlap with one of them. Thanks.

The whole point for writing this parser test is that if a developer looks at the file, there's an expected sequence of instructions to be produced. Again, it's not a lot of effort here, I would like to see it added so that it aligns with the others. Even if there are nops.

I'll note that the other einsum ONNX parse tests also don't have an expected parsing since they're all exception cases. The einsum ops are all tested by ONNX verify tests instead of parse tests.

Exception cases make sense because we know there are incompatible/unsupported args, so it will never produce a valid program. In this case, we won't throw an exception, so we expect a sequence of instructions to be produced.
Verify tests are good for when we want to test with expected values and that our migraphx program also produces a result within tolerance. I'm okay with adding a verify test instead, but we should use smaller CHW dimensions in that case.

Interesting view point here @kahmed10, about the whole point of these tests.
However, I humbly submit, these tests are not for developers - they run in our CI every single time. They should be black-box tests, and once in a while a deeper look (at parsing) for some other reason. It is not useful to run these kind of parsing tests to peep inside them (repeatedly in the CI) to look at intermediate non-standard kind of stuff.
If one were to produce some industry standard result/output here, I am all for checking that. But we had (strong) suggestions to even not do some basic one-liner checks in the bug fix, that would have removed some nop layers, -- which was a ridiculous suggestion BTW. So that should tell you, developers are getting a healthy dose of nop layers in this parser dump (that you so desire here)!
Surely a developer could run the command that you said is so easy to run: ./driver read einsum_permute_sd3_test.onnx --cpp, and look at the results.
BTW, question for you: I could just paste the output of this command in the test, as comments? And the developer(s) can peep at that.
But my approach had a reason: to show why this blind devotion to checking non-standard intermediate results doesn't serve any additional testing value. Yes, once in a while the internal IR may need a very critical check, but surely this bug fix isn't one of them. These kind of parse tests are brittle. They can change when the implementation changes. That is not testing anything, just like writing a buggy code, dumping its calculated output, and then using as a test vector (which I have also seen happen).
So, what I actually added was an invariant test -- pass/fail kind -- if it doesn't parse, there is a failure. The invariant part is, now you can optimize on the nop layers if you like, and the test will still succeed. As you yourself mentioned, einsum is complex and can change its internal implementation.
With this approach I wanted to show the simplicity of a test, and its binary (yes/no) kind of effectiveness.
Also, please note, suddenly being okay to replace a parse test with a verify test (which I didn't because it was a very large size matrix, and I wanted our tests to be able to recreate exactly what the SD3 layer was, hence even the name of the test) means that we don't get to see the parse test results that you so desire -- the same spot as this test currently is :-)
So again, I just wanted to make a point here about how we do our black-box testing. It was not about the effort of adding those 10 lines of IR in the test. I have spent much more time explaining here :-)
Incidentally, this devotion to checking internal shapes/IR doesn't get rid of the most serious test criterion: the glaring accuracy issues that creep up -- the ones that really matter in the final picture, and the ones that a user or a tester would care about.

These parse tests are meant to be unit tests, which are usually white box testing not black box testing. We only run the parser here to isolate the unit tests. We give it an input and write a test to check that its output(which is an migraphx) is what we would expect.

Khalique's suggestion is a good one, we check the parser case that does not throw.
(I had intended to first add this test to the negative tests (with a negative expectation of throw) on einsum, since that file exists, but instead preferred to make a series of positive tests.)

I'll note that the other einsum ONNX parse tests also don't have an expected parsing since they're all exception cases. The einsum ops are all tested by ONNX verify tests instead of parse tests.
