Single Consent

An analogy

Scenario A

  1. Alice goes into Krusty Kreme donut shop. A staff member immediately asks if she has any allergies.
  2. Alice says she's allergic to sprinkles.
  3. The staff member lets the other staff know not to offer Alice anything with sprinkles.
  4. Alice leaves and goes to Only Flans. They immediately ask if she has any allergies. Alice sighs.
  5. After the same thing happens at every place she visits, Alice is sick of talking about allergies.

In this rather stretched analogy, the shops are websites on different domains, and asking about allergies is displaying a cookie banner.

Scenario B

  1. Alice goes to Krusty Kreme and they ask if she has any allergies.
  2. Alice says she's allergic to sprinkles.
  3. The staff member lets other staff know, then calls the Allergy Awareness Association (AAA) and tells them "this customer is allergic to sprinkles"
  4. The AAA ask Krusty Kreme to give Alice a name badge with a fake name Bob, then records that Bob is allergic to sprinkles.
  5. Alice leaves and goes to Only Flans. They see her name badge and call the AAA and ask "What is Bob allergic to?".
  6. The AAA say "Bob is allergic to sprinkles".
  7. The Only Flans staff hide all the flans with sprinkles.
  8. Alice continues shopping, and never has to talk to another person about allergies.

In this scenario the AAA is the Single Consent service, and the name badge is a randomly-generated unique ID.
