What is Reef?

Reef is an eco-system designed to support automation. It consists of data and core services for processing near real-time data and issuing controls, events, and alarms. It has support for an operational model. It supports the archiving of field and application data and a set of RESTful API's for application developers. Reef's SOA Framework is supported by a AMQP compliant Message Broker.

What is Automation?

Automation is the use of a control system to manage operation and visibility of systems. Reef was designed to support automation in the electric utility world and has the basic functions for data acquisition and control. Reef can be applied to other verticals such as process control, water and gas utilities.

What is Messaging?

Simply put messaging supports the communication framework for the various services. The Reef services are considered clients of the message broker. Reef is not a message broker. It can use different brokers that are AMQP compliant with some or little modification. Check out Qpid and RabbitMQ for detailed descriptions on open source message brokers.
