This changes the rendered tabs as Non-breaking spaces (NBSP). In order to preserve existing indenting (which is nice especially for line wrapping overflow lines) these are placed into a span that effectively hides the characters from view, but preserves them if you try and copy and paste the content.
There should not be any visible change in formatting from this change.
