Many of the defaults don't work with some signs, so pass through pretty much all of the options for serial.Serial through the serial interface constructor, while still retaining backwards compatibility and late port initialisation in connect()

Hi there,
I've got an older sign I'm talking to over RS232. The default settings weren't working, so here are a couple of changes so that they are easy to configure at creation time, without breaking existing behaviour.
