BugleOS Core – Build System

Overview

BugleOS Core is the foundational runtime layer of the BugleOS operating system family.

This repository contains the build system responsible for producing the Core OS artifact: a minimal, secure, and enterprise-ready base environment that all higher-level BugleOS editions are derived from.

BugleOS Core is intentionally small, opinionated, and deterministic.
It is not an end-user system, but a product-grade platform layer designed to be composed, extended, and packaged into multiple delivery targets.

Purpose

The purpose of BugleOS Core is to provide:

  • A trusted runtime baseline for all BugleOS variants
  • A clear separation between toolchain, operating system base, and higher-level editions
  • A reproducible and auditable build output
  • A stable contract for downstream systems (Server, Desktop, WSL, Containers, Cloud Images)

BugleOS Core defines what it means to be BugleOS at the operating system level.

Scope

This project is responsible for building and assembling:

  • Core runtime libraries and system dependencies
  • Trust and cryptography foundations
  • Timezone and locale baselines
  • Essential filesystem layout and configuration
  • Minimal OS policies required for secure operation

Out of scope for this repository:

  • Kernel compilation
  • Cross-compiling toolchain construction
  • Graphical environments
  • Server-specific or Desktop-specific functionality
  • Image packaging for specific platforms

Those concerns are handled by downstream build layers.

Design Principles

BugleOS Core is designed according to the following principles:

Minimal by Design

Only components strictly required to define a usable, secure, and extensible OS base are included.

Deterministic Builds

Given the same inputs, the build output must be byte-for-byte reproducible.

Enterprise-First Security

Security is not an add-on:

  • Secure defaults
  • Explicit trust stores
  • Modern cryptographic policies
  • Clear upgrade paths

Composability

BugleOS Core is not modified directly by higher layers.
It is consumed as an artifact and extended via well-defined overlays or bundles.

Supply-Chain Awareness

Every release is intended to be:

  • Versioned
  • Checksum-verified
  • Auditable
  • Suitable for SBOM generation

Output Artifacts

A successful build of this repository produces one or more Core OS artifacts, typically including:

  • A compressed Core root filesystem
  • Build metadata and manifests
  • Checksums for integrity verification
  • Optional software bill of materials (SBOM)

These artifacts are designed to be consumed by automated systems, not manually edited.

Intended Consumers

BugleOS Core is designed to be consumed by:

  • Server and headless OS builds
  • Desktop and workstation OS builds
  • Container base images
  • Cloud and virtual machine images
  • Subsystem or developer environments

End users do not interact with BugleOS Core directly.

Versioning and Stability

BugleOS Core follows semantic versioning principles.

  • Patch releases address security fixes and defect corrections
  • Minor releases introduce additive capabilities without breaking compatibility
  • Major releases may introduce intentional breaking changes

Compatibility guarantees apply at the artifact interface level, not at the implementation level.

Security Model

BugleOS Core establishes the initial security posture for the operating system, including:

  • Trusted certificate authorities
  • Cryptographic runtime configuration
  • Secure filesystem defaults
  • Baseline user and permission models

Downstream layers may harden or extend this posture, but must not weaken it.

Project Status

This project is under active development.

Interfaces, outputs, and internal structure are expected to stabilize progressively as the BugleOS platform matures.

License

License information is defined in the repository license file.

Contributing

This repository is part of a larger operating system platform.

Contributions are expected to adhere to:

  • Deterministic build requirements
  • Minimalism and scope discipline
  • Clear justification for every dependency introduced

Further contribution guidelines will be provided as the project evolves.
