This is a collection of implementations of easy, but non-trivial classical ciphers of the 19th and 20th century that are all more or less based on, or inspired by, the ancient Polybius code.
All provided cipher systems start with creating a symbol table by using a Polybius square.
Most of the ciphers are classical ciphers created in the 19th and 20th century. The pure Polybius cipher is more than two thousand years old. All are easy to break.
WARNING! All cipher systems shown here are today obsolete. Do not use them for real life applications.
- The Polybius Code (Polybius, around 150 B.C.)
- The Playfair Cipher (Wheatstone, 1854)
- The Bifid Cipher (Delastelle, 1901)
- The ADFGX Cipher (Nebel, 1918)
I did not cover some well known derivatives and variants of the above cipher systems, like, e.g., ADFGVX, or Playfair with some extra twist. Because these variants do not add interesting aspects, and do not really make the cipher systems stronger.
